THE PORTRAIT
In this week-long workshop students will aim to complete two drawings using the materials of red, black and white pencils, graphite and charcoal. Dividing time between block in and modeling stages students will hone their skills of accurate observation and conceptual knowledge to convey both a physical presence and character of the model. A skull and ecorche casts will be used to bolster the discussion of the architecture of the portrait and the fundamentals of representation – character of the model, anatomy & structural conventions, and form rendering.
With the aid of master drawings we will investigate the historical use of dry media, from the Renaissance to the 19th Beaux Arts, and discuss the use of material to evoke the hue variety and textures of life.
Chelsea will illustrate each stage of the drawing process with a demonstration, one to be completed in three colors and one in charcoal and graphite. Alongside demos students will receive one on one critiques helping them towards their independent goals.

DRAWING THE PORTRAIT
Co/ Instructed with Tyler Berry
In this five day workshop artists will learn the Fundamentals of Portrait Drawing in idyllic New England surrounded by the world renowned collection of Contemporary and Historical artworks of the New Salem Museum.
Artists Tyler Berry and Chelsea Bard will lead students in this intensive week of Portrait Drawing. An emphasis will be placed on structure and anatomy, an approach to likeness through careful observation of proportion, skeletal landmarks, and abstract shape design. Students will also learn to create a sculptural quality to their portraits through in-depth analysis of the light and form.
The process begins with the block-in stage, aiming to capture character and examination of proportion, structure, and simple light and shadow. After the block in, students will begin modeling and articulating the forms through a consideration of volume, light and anatomy. Students will hone their abilities and knowledge with the guidance of master draftsmen in real time and in the company of the likes of John Singer Sargent, Andrew Wyeth and Edgar Maxence. On breaks they will journey to
specific paintings and drawings to draw forth concepts and principles of great works in the flesh. Tyler and Chelsea will also bring a selection of their work for display and as a teaching tool.
Both instructors will trade off instructing and demonstrating between mornings and afternoons. Students of all skill levels are welcome, though some experience in drawing is encouraged.
Enjoy a special evening dinner for workshop students hosted at the museum with Tyler, Chelsea, and the NSMA team!

Artists of every level are encouraged to join.

Figure Drawing : A Structural Approach
During this five-day course, students will greatly strengthen their drawing skills and anatomical knowledge through a comprehensive investigation of the human figure. The course will begin with a series of short poses on the first day, in which students will hone the process of beginning a figure by establishing accurate proportions, gesture, and anatomical landmarks early on—building a solid armature on the page that will support a masterful figure. Students will then apply what they’ve practiced in the shorter poses to a thorough 4-day (26 hour) long pose, in which they will take the expression of form and rendering further.

In this three day workshop artists will learn the fundamentals of expressive portrait drawing. With an emphasis on structure and anatomy, Tyler and Chelsea will help students in understanding likeness through careful observation of proportion, structure, and expression.
Artists will also learn to create a luminous sculptural quality to their portraits through in-depth analysis of the light and form. There will be one pose for the entire three days. The process begins with the block-in stage, which aims to capture the likeness and character through accurate proportion, shape design and structural anatomy. After the block-in is complete, students will move into modeling form through an understanding of the light source.
Tyler and Chelsea will demo for the first half of day one. Each student will receive daily, personalized feedback on their drawings.
